SRJC’s Philosophy Department has two dedicated tutors whose services are offered free to all students. Contact them at any time for support in your studies. When reaching out to our tutors, include the name of your class, professor, and information about the help you’re looking for. Let them know if you’d prefer to communicate over email, meet via video conference, or in person.

Hello everyone, my name is Janessa and I’m excited to be one of your philosophy tutors at the JC! My own academic philosophical journey started at this school, with a critical thinking class eons ago. I fell in love with it so much that I declared it as my major and then moved onto UC Davis where I got my bachelors in Philosophy, with a minor in Medieval Studies. One of my favorite things about studying philosophy in school is how ripe the environment is for conversation! I remember staying after class many times to continue to chat with fellow students about the topics, and that spirit is what I’m excited to continue with you! I was a philosophy major at the JC from August 2022 to May 2024 (though my soul has never left the JC)! I then transferred to UC Berkeley, where I'll be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in August 2026. My favorite area of philosophy is moral philosophy, and in particular, I'm interested in questions like these: "What matters?,” "How should we live our lives?," "Why should I do the right thing/ why should I do any particular thing at all?,” as well as the near uncountable issues and questions entangled with these core ones. I'm also deeply concerned with putting my best answers to these questions into practice. Here's a fun fact about me :D - The first thing I ever said in a JC philosophy class was "I'm totally pro baby killing" to Professor Lesson in Phil 7 (I promise there is context!).
